The School of Mechanical Engineering at Yangtze University traces its roots to the Department of Petroleum Development of the former Jianghan Petroleum Institute. It began enrolling undergraduate students nationwide in 1979 and began enrolling master’s students in 1995. In 1985, the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Jianghan Petroleum Institute was established as an independent entity. In 2003, the Agricultural Machinery Teaching and Research Section of the Engineering Technology Department of the former Hubei Agricultural College was merged into the School, formally creating the School of Mechanical Engineering, Yangtze University. In 2023, the School led the establishment of the Hubei Provincial Modern Industry College for Intelligent Manufacturing of Oil and Petrochemical Equipment.

The School is characterized by energy equipment. Its Mechanical Engineering discipline was formerly a key discipline of both the former China National Petroleum Corporation and Hubei Province. The School leads the development of the provincial advantageous and distinctive discipline cluster in “Intelligent Oil and Gas Equipment.” It offers a doctoral program in Petroleum Field Machinery, two first-level discipline master's programs in Mechanical Engineering and Power Engineering & Engineering Thermophysics, and a professional Master's program in Mechanical Engineering. The school has four undergraduate programs: Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation; Materials Forming and Control Engineering; Industrial Design; and Robotics Engineering. The School has 1,844 undergraduates and 313 doctoral and master's students. It has two national first-class undergraduate program construction sites, as well as a National Characteristic Specialty and a Hubei Provincial Brand Specialty. It has been selected for the national Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program and is a council (alliance) member of the China Machinery Industry Excellent Engineer Education Alliance, the China Petroleum and Petrochemical Equipment Industry Association, and the Hubei Intelligent Manufacturing Society Consortium. It hosts 13 provincial and ministerial-level teaching and research platforms, including the Hubei Provincial Oil and Gas Drilling and Completion Tools Engineering Technology Research Center and the Hubei Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Mechanical Engineering Training, as well as four university-level research institutes such as the Institute of Geothermal Resource Development.

The School currently comprises seven teaching and research units: the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, the Department of Materials Engineering, the Department of Industrial Design, the Department of Robotics Engineering, the Department of Engineering Mechanics, the Central Laboratory, and the Mechanical Engineering Training Center. It has 83 faculty and staff members, including 62 full-time faculty and laboratory personnel. Among the full-time teachers, there are 14 professors,34 associate professors,10 doctoral supervisors, and 49 master's supervisors. One faculty member is a recipient of the Special Allowance of the State Council; four are Hubei Provincial Distinguished Professors(Chutian Scholars); three are Industry Professors; one is a Hubei Provincial Top-notch Young Talent; and six others are provincial- or ministerial-level academic leaders or key academic staff members.

Over the past five years, the School has undertaken nearly 200 various research projects, including projects under the National Key Research and Development Program, key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, major technological innovation projects of Hubei Province, and numerous industry-sponsored projects, with total research funding exceeding RMB 80 million. It has received 15 provincial and ministerial-level awards for teaching and research, including a First Prize in the Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards (as the leading institution). It has been granted over 300 domestic and international invention patents, published 20 academic books and textbooks, and published more than 400 high-quality papers in academic journals.

The School places great emphasis on cultivating students’ professional competence, overall qualities, and innovative abilities. It has developed the "Light of Craftsmanship" student innovation and practical education model, which emphasizes upholding craftsmanship, mastering technical skills, and cultivating professional ethics. It has produced a number of outstanding graduates with both good character and academic excellence, including Zhao Chuanyu, one of the first National Moral Models. The average employment rate of the School’s graduates exceeds 95%. In the past five years, students have won nearly 500 awards in various national competitions, including top honors such as the Special Prize and Gold Prize in the National "Challenge Cup" Competition, a Gold Prize in the "Internet+" Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, and First Prizes in competitions such as the National College Students Mechanical Innovation Design Competition, the National College Students Advanced Engineering Drawing Competition, the National College Students Metallographic Skills Competition, and the China Graduate Energy Equipment Innovation Design Competition.

The School has long-term and close cooperation and exchange relationships in teaching and research with many overseas universities, such as the University of Houston (USA), New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (USA), and the University of Calgary (Canada).
